The pre-processional is the time just before the procession of the wedding party is to begin. This is the time that important family members, such as the mother of the bride, are ushered to their seats. Changing the music from prelude to pre-processional lets your guests know that the ceremony is close to beginning and is a way to honor those family members who are especially important to you. The choices for pre-processional music are endless. You may choose a piece of chamber music, an instrumental version of a contemporary ballad, or something that has special meaning to you and your family, such as a version of a lullaby your mother used to sing, or a favorite hymn of your grandmother's. While the choice is yours, keep in mind the tempo of the piece (is it appropriate for escorting family members to their seats, or would it seem as if someone should be sprinting?) and how it will fit in with your other ceremony musical choices. A song that is vastly different in style from your prelude and processional may make your ceremony music seem disconnected.
