OVERVIEW
The territory of Greece stretches from the south Aegean to the Balkan countries. The historic sites of Greece span a time frame over four thousand years, leaving much for the curious traveler to discover.
Greece, as it is visited today, was born of diverse influences. Romans, Arabs, Latin Crusaders, Venetians, Slavs, Albanians, Turks, and Italians have all contributed to the landscape of modern Greece: from churches and monasteries to imposing castles. Most notably, the influence of four centuries of Ottoman Turkish rule contributed greatly to Greek music, cuisine, language and way of life.
Crete, the largest island in Greece, is the most popular vacation destination in all of Greece. It separates the Aegean from the Libyan Sea and marks the boundary between Europe and Africa. The landscape of Crete ranges from majestic mountains to sandy beaches, connected by flowing streams. The built landscape contains many historic sites and relics; elegant pieces of architecture; world-class museums; ancient ruins, fortresses, castles and monasteries; and so much more. Culturally, you’ll find an area filled with fellow travelers enjoying the wondrous sights, sounds and flavors that truly make Crete a popular Mediterranean destination.
