OVERVIEW THINGS TO SEE AND DO

    Mountain Biking:

Claimed to be one of the worlds fastest growing sports, mountain biking in Costa Rica is gaining ground in popularity. It is offered in a number of areas in the country but perhaps better suited for the area of Tilarán - Guanacaste.

One operator is currently expanding his operation and has begun developing several biking routes for diehard enthusiasts who want to sweat and work it when on their bikes.

While there are routes that take as long as six-hours to complete, there are also more moderate paths for those less-experienced riders.

    Windsurfing:

This world-class sport has not lost any of its impetus as its grown in popularity. Those with a penchant for speed and water will not be disappointed when they take on winds of 30 to 45 miles per hour on Lake Arenal. This man-made lake is found in the area of Tilarán-Guanacaste. Framed by low green ridges, the blue lake is a mecca for those with a need for speed.

Experienced operators run their businesses on the lake-side and provide quality equipment as well as comfortable accommodation for those who do not want to be too far away from the action. Lodges are numerous and range in prices from moderate to expensive. Taking to the lake is merely one option. You can also brave the ocean's waves while windsurfing and experience the salty winds at any of the beaches on either the Pacific or Caribbean coast.

    Horseback Tours:

Take one of many tours offered throughout Costa Rica where you can enjoy the tropical surroundings from the back of a trusty steed. Let the horse do all the work while you enjoy several forest trails Or take a jaunt along a breezy beach in the mid Pacific region. Many tours will take you to remote areas where trees and flowers frame natural fresh water pools, or enjoy slathering yourself in mud and then immersing yourself in relaxing hot water springs. It doesn't matter if you've never ridden a horse before since the horses are docile and you'll be lead by an experienced horseman.

    Whitewater Rafting:

Churning along the white water while taking in breathtaking scenery is a popular tourist activity in Costa Rica. Whether you want to brave class V rapids or paddle with the family along smoothly flowing waters, the variety of options are staggering. Virtually every destination in Costa Rica offers rafting expeditions on a number of rivers. Take advantage of the "wet" season and schedule your trip during the months of May through October when the rains bring the levels of the rivers up to adventure levels.

Nothing compares with braving the world-class rapids while traveling through some of the most beautiful forests in he world.

    Sea Kayaking:

Good arms and a strong back will help you practice this sport. Offered up and down the Pacific and Caribbean coasts, sea kayaking is very popular. When the waves are rolling and easy, it provides a great way to travel quietly to estuaries and mangroves for up close and personal viewing of wildlife. And when the waves begin to pound, it provides exhilarating sport tor those with a penchant for wet fun.

    Canopy Touring:

Nothing will prepare you for the thrill of flying through the air some 15 meters off the forest floor. This sport is not for the one with acrophobia, the platforms are sometimes as high as 27 meters in the canopy. While standing in the swaying canopy equipped with quality harnesses and safety lines, you can take a few minutes to enjoy a bird's eye view of the forest canopy. Bromelias and epiphytes as well as the abundance of birds are a treat to see, especially from the top! Several outfitters run this type of tour so check it out and enjoy the experience of the adrenaline rush.
