The
Nerine, also known as the Spider Lily,
is pink, although it is also available in red, orange
and white. It is a bulbous plant which originated
in the coastal regions of South Africa. Its botanical
name is after the Greek sea-good, Nereus. Legend
has it that the bulb was placed aboard ships to be
traded and that some of them were hijacked to the
Isle of Guernsey where they proliferate today.
The
leaves of Nerine are about 10 inches long. The average 16
inch flower stalk bears a cluster of 6 - 10 trumpet shaped
blooms with rather undulating flower lobes. Each flower is
1 - 3 inches in diameter.
As
a complete flower, Nerine's height, erectness,
and rather open, airy appearance make it a good
choice for those wishing a more contemporary look to their
wedding design. Individually, its flowers can be used for
corsages for the wedding party. It is available
year-round. The flowers last for more than one week.
The
most popular varieties are "Favorite" and "Pink Triumph."
Perhaps the Nerine is used to symbolize the triumph of the young
girl winning her favorite guy. |
