 Wedding Invitation Wording and Etiquette
Wedding invitations make up only 2-5% of your wedding budget, but don't overlook the important role they play in making your wedding a success. The perfect invitation not only conveys important details about your special day to friends and loved ones, but it literally creates the ambiance for your event whether it is formal, semi formal, or casual.  It is recommended that you purchase your invitations at least 3 months prior to your wedding date to allow ample time for assemblage and addressing, and always order extra envelopes in case of mistakes.  Mail your invitations at 6-8 weeks before your wedding date.
The time of day that your wedding takes place generally dictates the formality of your event.
Weddings held after 6:00 p.m in a place of worship are considered the most formal, while afternoon and early morning weddings in any other locations are considered semi formal to casual.  Your choice of invitation wording should also convey the type and formality of your wedding.  "The honour of your presence is requested" signifies a more formal ceremony at a place of worship, while "The pleasure of your company is requested" indicates a less formal ceremony at a secular location.
Formal invitations are generally one sided with black printing on an ecru or soft white background.  They come in many designs and styles, and include both  inner and outer envelopes, response cards, reception cards and tissue paper.  Semi formal invitations come in a rainbow of colors and a myriad of designs to compliment any style and budget.  For ease of assemblage, I recommend pocket invitations because their sleek design make assemblage a dream instead of a nightmare.
The following are a few rules regarding how to address your invitations: The return address of the host should go on the back flap of the outer envelope, and the name and return address of the bride should go on the response card.  While addressing your invitations remember to write everything out as follows:
                                        Mr. and Mrs. John Marlow
                                        415 East Harbor Street
                                        Monterey, California 97115
