Wedding Insurance: An Option to Consider

Wedding insurance is a newer concept that protects couples planning a wedding from financial loss, due to unforeseen mishaps or cancellations on their wedding day. Because you can't plan for everything, you or your parents may want to consider purchasing some type of wedding insurance.

Companies like WedSafe offer two types of wedding insurance  products that can be purchased individually or as a package "to help provide security and protect the wedding of your dreams."

  • Wedding Event Cancellation / Postponement PlusInsurance – protects your financial investment in your wedding; covers cancellation / postponement, lost deposits, and more
  • Wedding Liability Insurance – protects you against financial liability arising from your wedding; required by many venues

Wedding insurance – specifically cancellation/postponement insurance – is affordable and can provide great peace of mind. The cost should be about 1-2% of the amount of coverage – for example, a plan that provides $25,000 in coverage should cost about $300.

Cancellation/postponement covers you if the bride or groom or someone in the wedding party falls ill or if the weather prevents you from having your wedding. You can also purchase additional coverage for things like lost jewelry, and loss of deposit.

Aside from getting wedding insurance, you should always have a backup plan, in case of issues you can't control, such as weather. For instance, don’t have an outdoor wedding without backup rain protection. An outdoor wedding can be totally ruined by a sudden shower so don’t take chances. Rent a large enough tent, with tie-downs for wind, to cover the entire celebration. Wedding gowns were not designed to get wet, and even a quick rain shower will ruin a dress. Also, if you suspect it may rain, have umbrellas on hand to chaperone guests from their car to the tent. If you book an outdoor venue, ask if your venue has an indoor portion where you can move the reception in the event of bad weather.

You can't plan for everything, but you can be sure you're covered. Consider wedding insurance as a way to protect the financial investment you've made in your wedding day.
