Choosing a Wedding Headpiece

When it comes to headpieces, you have a number of options that work either with or without a veil. Headpieces are commonly used as the anchor for your veil, holding it in place for the entire event, or allowing for the detachment of the veil through the use of hooks, snaps, or Velcro. There are other headpieces, such as garden hats, that make a statement all on their own, without the aid of a veil. Your headpiece can even be as simple as a few hairpins adorned with pearls or crystals to add just a touch of finesse to your hairstyle, especially if you are choosing to go without a veil. You will find an array of headpieces described in this chapter, including how they are worn, and whether they can be worn with a veil.

Profile

This ornamental comb is a great way to accent a sophisticated up do, such as a French twist or chignon. Profiles are generally worn without a veil, and can feature flowers, feathers, beads, or pearls. You can wear a profile comb either on one side or underneath your hairstyle.

Garden Hat

The garden hat is a great way to make a dramatic statement with your look. This wide-brimmed hat is especially well suited for an outdoor summer wedding, as it not only looks elegant, but also provides shade for your face. If you choose to wear a hat, you will want to discuss this with your photographer as you may need to remove it for pictures, which would mean you would also need hair touch ups.

Headband

The headband is a classic look that extends from one temple to the other. This headpiece can be as simple or elaborate as you want, and can be made from satin, lace, or the same material as your dress.

Juliet Cap

A Juliet cap sits at the crown of your head, and can be adorned with pearls, beading, or any other materials that coordinate with your gown. You can wear a Juliet cap alone, or use it to attach a veil.

Wedding Headpieces: Snood

If you are wearing your hair in a bun, you may want to wear a snood, which encases the bun at the back of your head. The snood can be made of a variety of materials, and feature accents such as beading, lace, or crystal adornments. If you would like to add a veil to this look, it can be attached to the bottom of the headpiece.

Wedding Headpieces: Tiara

A tiara is a very popular headpiece that sits across the top of your head. Tiaras can be as simple or as elaborate as you want, and they generally showcase crystals or diamonds. This is a great headpiece if you want to feel like a princess on your big day.

Hairpins

Using hairpins is the perfect way for a simplistic bride to add some sparkle to her hairstyle. Wedding hairpins can be adorned with a variety of things, anywhere from pearls and crystals, to flowers and butterflies. Hairpins work great in any type of up do, and gently swept back hair that does not have any type of definitive structure.

Crown

When it comes to head pieces, you have a number of options that work either with or without a veil. Headpieces are commonly used as the anchor for your veil, holding it in place for the entire event, or allowing for the detachment of the veil through the use of hooks, snaps, or Velcro.

Wreath

Wreaths wrap all the way around your head, and are usually made from natural materials such as flowers and greenery. Wreaths are a great way to incorporate color into your wedding look, and you can ask your florist to create this headpiece for you using the same flowers as your bouquet.
