 Beyond the Obvious
Most articles about hiring a videographer suggest you ask the basic questions: Who will be behind the camera? What kind of camera? How long will it take to get the video? etc.
While these questions may have been appropriate 10 years ago, videography is now a sophisticated art form (at least SOME videography!) and should be considered on the same plane as your photography.

First and foremost, ask yourself if you like a particular videographer - since you will spend a good deal of your wedding day around him or her. Then look at their website. Often you will be able to tell how much effort and art a videographer devotes to their craft by how much effort and talent they show in their site development. A good site is not difficult to create today.

If the site appeals to you, look at clips - highlights and trailers - that a particular videographer has produced. Don't bother with  their promo piece which usually contains the best bits and pieces of several  weddings. You want to know how a prospective videographer makes a story; how they organize and conceptualize a wedding from start to finish so it's more like a movie.

Ask the videographer how they shoot - where they will be during your ceremony, your toasts, first dance, etc. Old-school videographers will interrupt the action of your day, or they will stand in front of guest, circle the couple during the first dance, descend on guests while they are eating and ask them to say something to the couple, or fix a bright light on top of their cameras so that wherever the camera is pointing, the light is in that person's eyes. A good videographer knows how to stay out of the way. He or she will know  to dress appropriately at the wedding and connect with your photographer rather than get in the way,

Most important, look at reviews from other couples. Your videographer should have top scores and raves on their site or on another wedding site such as Wedding Wire.  Although you can't please everyone all the time, a top-quality videographer is much more than a camera operator - he or she is sensitive to the environment and people, courteous at all times, and invisible or out of the way all the time.
