A summer
wedding is the perfect time to
feature Delphinium. Although most varieties are
available year-round, all varieties are readily
available from June through November. Also
known as Larkspur, this multi-bloomed flower
is regal yet soft in appearance. It has
spike-shaped flower clusters of 1-2 inch
disc shaped flowers towering in 8-20
inch spikes on stems 1/2 to 4 feet long.
Useful alone in vases or for decoration, they
will last at least one week. They are
popularly used in Flemish-style bouquets.
A
perfect variety
for an "old fashioned
wedding" theme, Delphinium originated in
Asia, although today they can be found in
cultivation on most continents. Delphinium
consolida was named by the Greeks after the
god of the city Delphi. In Greek, Consolida
means "to strengthen", which adds meaning to
a wedding where one hopes the matrimonial
bond will strengthen the betrotheds'
commitment to each other.
Pink,
white and blue varities are the most
dominant and most traditional, although
red and mixed types can also be obtained.
One of the pink varieties, the "Princess Caroline",
so named because it was used at Princess
Caroline of Monaco's wedding, is characterized
by outstanding uniformity in both color and length.
Like other pure and hybrid varieties, these
Delphinium have no scent. |
